MGA Match #5
Griffith Park G.C. vs. Rancho Park G.C. @ Rancho Park
July 12, 2018

Many of our grinder friends woke up early today to beat the traffic across town to Rancho Park.  And what's better to do when you get to the course early, than to hit a bucket of balls?  The range was buzzing this morning with a lot of navy blue shirts, getting ready for this important match against our rival club Rancho Park.  We sure had some committed golfers today and whatever happened - we had a GP team to be proud of.  We all showed up.  And we were ready.

Today's highlights include Michael Leland who managed to raise some complaints from the opposing captain.  When did Michael know he was in for such a spectacular round?  When he birdied the first hole!  What a way to jump on your opponent out the gate.  Michael made the turn even, then finished the back 1-under for a brilliant 70, net 64.  Late fill-in Andrew Bunnin did what he does best - beat the s*%# out of whoever we put in front of him.  He clawed thru the front winning by just one, but parred 6 of the next 7 to close out his match on #16 - shooting 75 for a net 66.

As our leading point-getter in June, Craig Pinckes started this morning right where he left off.  He DOMINATED the front winning 4-up, then went on to birdie three of the last four holes - chasing down a 73 for a net 68.  Our anchor group featured Matthew Nicklaw who halved the front, with the match continuing to be TIGHT deep into the back.  It all came down to #18, where an up-and-down-birdie from the bunker did it.  His sand save won the back AND overall from the match, snatching 5 of 6 individual points from his opponent.  Matthew's sand save was an 8 point swing!

But it wasn't quite enough.  The result of today's effort was a 0 - 4 loss to Rancho Park G.C.  GP loses individual 29 to 43, loses team 12 to 24.  Andrew Bunnin gets the free round next time for bringing in 11 of 12 possible points from his match.

One regular season match remains, where we'll likely need to sweep all four points to make the playoffs.  But that's what great about the new playoff system.  We can still make it and defend our title.  Everyone keep their heads high because I ain't singing yet!

Our next match will be vs. Sepulveda G.C. @ Encino - Thursday, August 16.  You can mark your availability on the player sheet anytime.  Will send a reminder a week out.
